xp sp3
hawklord - 11-5-2008 at 08:48

hi,

does anyone know whether sp3 is actually useful, with lots and lots of new things - or just a combination of fixes since sp2

http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/xp_sp3.asp

and -

Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) has an uninstallation problem if Windows XP Service Pack 3 (XPSP3) is installed with IE7 running. If IE7 is running on XPSP2, Windows Update will offer XPSP3 as a high priority update. If XPSP3 is installed, Internet Explorer 7 will remain on the system after the install is complete. However, IE7 cannot then be uninstalled.

When IE7 is installed on Windows XP SP2, the existing IE6 files are backed up in an uninstall directory. Those IE6 files are the ones that shipped on XPSP2 plus all the security updates installed while using IE6.

Windows XP SP3 contains a newer version of the Internet Explorer 6 files. Uninstalling IE7 on XPSP3 has the system revert to the backed up (older) version of the IE6 files rather than the newer XPSP3 version. The operating system then ends up in a mixed file state in which most files would be the upgraded XPSP3, except for the IE6 files restored when uninstalling IE7.

This state is not supported and is very bug prone. Hence to prevent this state unistalling, IE7 has been disabled.

It is recommended that users uninstall IE7 first, install XPSP3, then reinstall IE7. This allows IE7 to be uninstalled in the future without problems.

just a bit of (maybe) useful info

You should have the option to "custom" your install when you go to update :) I speak from experience here :) Unless you chose to upate automatically at a certain time of day?

It is set to update automatically, but does it also include SP3?

Oh dear:o Mine hasn't updated to SP3 yet. It is not even trying to download it. I'll leave it as it is for the moment, I need a stable system right now:D

hawklord - 11-5-2008 at 22:54

it'll come along,

this is just what i do, but its a thought -

i'm up to unofficial sp5 on my w2k, all patches and fixes are installed,
my auto-update is switched off,
every month i go to microsoft and do a custom check for any updates i may need and just download the ones i want,

its just what i do but a thought

I have to say mine does not do that .

Daz - 12-5-2008 at 00:09

Nor mine, sp3 is running just fine on the laptop... No problems whatsoever.

I've not bothered on my main rig yet though, as I've slipstreamed it to my XP disc, so won't bother until I next do a clean, fresh install... It's not exactly vital like sp2 was, it just seems to be pretty much a roll up of the previous 100 (?) odd updates/patches, and one or two minor tweaks....

LSemmens - 12-5-2008 at 12:32

Is there anywhere reliable that I can get a torrent of SP3 otherwise I'll have to wait for access to a fast connection again.

Strangely enough, I have the Piratebay bookmarked, and promptly forgot about it. Thanks Hawkey!

It may be worth mentioning that a tracker posted on that site may not point at a kosher Microsoft SP3 cab but something containing a hacked version?
