massive pc slowdown
dtr204 - 20-11-2008 at 23:34

running xp sp2 on a 2.66 pentium 4 with 512mb ram

just within the last 2 days my internet speed dropped almost in half

[bad img]http://www.speedtest.net/result/359487028.png[/bad img]

and the pc is running slow in general. I'm using avast avg, full scan showed nothing. Anyone mind looking over a hjt log and telling me if theres anything unusual.

What sort of service are you paying for?
8000kb/s down and 2199 up are quite good - my down speed is 10074kb/s for example although my up is only 483kb/s

Do you really consider 8000kb/s slow???

dtr204 - 21-11-2008 at 00:22

i was getting much higher speeds before the problem, but if 8000kbps isn't that slow then maybe i'm confusing the issue. for example when i hit 'reply' to write this it took more than a minute for the page to load. The problem seems to come and go now as well

Daz - 21-11-2008 at 00:30

Over here (UK) 8meg is pretty decent line speed. until last month I was on 4meg, but have now had an upgrade to 10meg.

That said, I'm paying for 10meg, so I'd not be happy if my line was running at 5meg...

Could you be the victim of "traffic shaping" (capping), where your ISP deem you are a high user (large downloads etc) so have capped you...? My cable supplier do this to heavy users over here.

Is it only on certain sites you have slow speeds, or pretty much everywhere?

Other than that, wait for Pancake to check your log for you....

Is BitTorrent traffic on a well-known BitTorrent port (6881) throttled?

* The BitTorrent upload (seeding) worked. Our tool was successful in uploading data using the BitTorrent protocol.

* There's no indication that your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent uploads. In our tests a TCP upload achieved minimal 1826 Kbps while a BitTorrent upload achieved maximal 1862 Kbps. You can find details here.

* The BitTorrent download worked. Our tool was successful in downloading data using the BitTorrent protocol.

* There's no indication that your ISP rate limits your BitTorrent downloads. In our tests a TCP download achieved minimal 3673 Kbps while a BitTorrent download achieved maximal 8481 Kbps. You can find details here.

also, the slowdown happens on all sites

Daz - 21-11-2008 at 02:07

I rarely touch Torrents so don't know much about them, that said, they are an easy taget for ISP's over here, so it could be possible you are being shaped/capped, especially if you're seeding/downloading quite a lot.

Your ISP should be able to tell you this though.

See what Pancake thinks of your HJT Log, and go from there...

dtr204 - 21-11-2008 at 02:19

i don't really use torrents that much either, i just used that site as a test to see if bandwidth was being throttled (capped)
