Hi

I have exactly the same behaviour on my PC. I've tried different spyware tools (spyware doctor, spyhunter, windows defense, spybot), I run Kaspersky Anti-Virus (I also tried McAfee) and I've also tried to run ComboFix.

So far nothing has helped...

RAA - 7-4-2008 at 07:20

Hello everyone.

Thanks for your replies. I must admit I have not read the topics at the top of the forum yet, but will do so...

As far as a new thread I could of course do this but my PC symptoms are literally exactly the same as posted here (not more, not less) so in this case I would probably just copy the message from crj17 into a new thread. But I won't mind posting a new thread if it still makes sense.

I will try out HiJackThis (have never tried this before). I've also changed the settings for the RPC service, I'll let you know if this makes any difference.

In the mean time, below please find my ComboFix log below.

Thanks!

We need to install your Recovery Console first.
Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

[bad img]http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh103/velta911/KB310994.gif[/bad img]

Download the file & save it as its originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

[bad img]http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh103/velta911/rc1.gif[/bad img]

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Pancake:

Thank you for your help and very clear description on what to do. However, unfortunately, it did not turn out as expected.

I did the appropriate download (XP SP 2) and upon droping this file on ComboFix a small progressbar is shown for a few seconds, then disappears, next the cursor turns into a hourglass for a few seconds and then a blue command window pops up for a fraction of a second and shuts down immidiately. I think some text is shown in the command window, but it is impossible to read since it shuts down so quickly. Prior to this I had deactivated my anti-virus and anti-spyware programs.

I've kept on searhing the net and found another article which I beleive is the same trojan :

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic138667.html

This guy says he got read of it when running AVIR (I presume he ment AVIRA). I will install AVIR and run a scan and see if it detects anything. I will post the results from the AVIR scan.

Thanks again.

RAA - 8-4-2008 at 11:59

Avira AntiVir scan did not find anything...

Pancake - 8-4-2008 at 22:13

Please download HijackThis to your desktop..

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe
Alternate link
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe

This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:Program FilesTrend MicroHijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:Program FilesTrend MicroHijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

=====================================

Please copy this page to *Notepad* and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.
1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Open *notepad* and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Quote:

C:WINDOWSsystem32livodljl.dll
C:sqmnoopt02.sqm
C:sqmdata02.sqm

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEsoftwaremicrosoftwindows ntcurrentversionwinlogonnotifylivodljl]

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe which is on the Desktop.

[bad img]http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif[/bad img]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:ComboFix.txt

Please copy and paste the ComboFix.txt along with a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply please.

I dont see any malware in there so that looks fine now.You will need to install you Recovery Console because if you do have problems at any time you will not be able to do a Recovery and get your system back.

RAA - 10-4-2008 at 13:40

Pancake:

The problem is gone!!

Thank you very, very much, you've just lifted a heavy burden of my shoulders. I was getting quite desperate and my next step would have been reformatting and reinstalling everything...

I must admit I was a bit sceptical of this hijack/combofix solution but, fortunately, you proved me wrong... Obviously, you know your stuff.

Thanks again! kewl_glasses

(I will install a recovery console.)

LSemmens - 10-4-2008 at 15:35

Now your problem is solved RAA, hang around, you may pick up a few other clues, and may even be able to assist someone else with their problems.

Pancake - 10-4-2008 at 22:26

This will clear away any of the files and folders that were created by ComboFix.

Now that you are clean, and If you wish to do so, here are a few things that you can do that will help keep your computer a bit more clean and secure..they can be done at your leisure.

Download and scan with CCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

1. Starting with v1.27.260, http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation. IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free Basic or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
• Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Cookies.
• Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
• Clean all entries in the "System" section.
• Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
• Clean all except cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
• Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
• Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
• Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the bad webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).

Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

Hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Keep Anti Virus Software updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. See here (http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/security/fwvirus.html) to choose one.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
Here (http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/security/fwfirewall.html) are some Vista compatible firewalls also.

Know What You're Installing
Check the source.
To avoid malware, make sure your software comes from a reputable source. Be particularly suspicious of sponsored software (software that relies on advertising) or software that claims to speed up your Internet connection.

Use Custom Install.
If you feel comfortable with software installation, you can choose Custom Install (as opposed to Typical Install). Custom Install allows you to select only the software components you wish to install, and leave out others (such as potential spyware).

Modify Security Settings (Internet Explorer 6)
To reduce the risk of installing malware, you can set Internet Explorer to high security mode. To do so:

Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools > Internet Options….
On the Internet Options screen, select the Security tab, then select the Internet icon (if it is not already selected).
Under Security level for this zone, click Default Level. Set the slider to High.
Note: You may have to lower the security level to view certain Web sites.
Next, select the Trusted Sites icon. Under Security level for this zone, click Default Level. Set the slider to Medium.
Click Apply, then OK to save the changes.

Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link:

If you want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is, or how well any of the "rogue" programs listed at the above link work, check this for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs:
