Hijack This Please
vchakra23 - 10-2-2008 at 17:12

Hello...
I have this annoying adware that I know is on my computer. I have multiple applications running to figure out where it is but have been unable to find/fix it.

This is what I have running right now:

1) Webroot Spysweeper (v 5.5.7.124)
2) Lavasoft AD-Aware 2007
3) Windows Defender
4) AVG Anti-Virus (v 7.5.516)

These software keep finding somethign everytime I run it, but is not able to find the parent program that is invoking this garbage.

I think it all started with a 'compete' toolbar that got installed by a couple of kids visitng us. I've just not been able to completly get rid of it.

Symptoms:
Whenever I am using the internet, I can notice that things stop for a second especially when i am using the Google or a search engine, then a few popups open with exactly the same search string. A few of the sites it brings back are stopped right away by webroot but some of the cookies get through and spawn more. I have scheduled these scans to runs every couple hours so things don't get out of hand, but I am at a loss to figure out where there the root cause.

I have used CC cleaner to scour the registry to remove everything with 'Compete' in it, but that hasn't helped too much either.

I am attaching the hijack this log and am hoping that one of you experts can help me resovle this as I do use the computer for work and connect to vpn. I don't want to pass on anything unwanted when connected to the corporate networks...

Thanks in Advance...
Rip...

I am running a NOD 32 Free Download run as I noticed that this app was the most supported on the Forums.

I'll post my findings from that as well when done

Thanks,
Vivek

vchakra23 - 11-2-2008 at 02:29

NOD 32 came back with nothing as well...

Daz - 11-2-2008 at 04:08

Have you run SpySweper and the like in Safe Mode...? (It may help?)

Anyway, Pancake is our resident HJT expert, so wait for his advice... He'll sort you out, I'm sure.

LSemmens - 11-2-2008 at 14:03

As Daz has said, Pancake is our resident expert. He lives in OZ, so may look in tomorrow (it's midnight here). My initial scan of your HJT log doesn't show anything grossly untoward, but, wait for PK's all clear first.

Pancake - 12-2-2008 at 00:01

It all looks fine but lets do a check inside...

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For further information regarding this download you can see this on this http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix Information Page

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Caution...Never run and remove files using ComboFix without being supervised by a security analyst

vchakra23 - 12-2-2008 at 02:29

Hello Pancake...Thanks for the help here...

I did run into a roadblock.

I did run the download from the desktop and i got the following error. That may be part of the issue.

COmspec Error :
The COMSPEC environment variable was found to be corrupt. Combofix has attempted repairs & will need to restart.

I did click ok and go past that. But i just wanted to let you know what I saw

The process did run to the end oncw it started back up.

Does the machine restart though...Will attach the log in a min

vchakra23 - 12-2-2008 at 02:44

I'm not sure if this is useful bit I thought I'd attach this as well. Its the Quarantine log file

Pancake - 12-2-2008 at 03:03

Its best to copy and paste as its easier to read....

Can you turn off your BBCode please. its in the bottom right hand corner...Sorry that these images dont work in my post its just that this website has not gone into the 21st century yet..:( You will have to paste them into your browser to see how they work

We need to install your Recovery Console first.
Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

[bad img]http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh103/velta911/KB310994.gif[/bad img]

Download the file & save it as its originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

[bad img]http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh103/velta911/rc1.gif[/bad img]

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

[color=RED]Please do not reboot your machine until we have reviewed the log.[/color]

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to the ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

[bad img]http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m7/dasaki/CFScript.gif[/bad img]

Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Panckae..The kb for microsoft that you just sent me has a link to down the setup disk file. Is that what you want to me to download. I have XP sp3 installed as well . I don't see that in the list...

Will XP SP2 suffice...

vchakra23 - 12-2-2008 at 03:19

Okay I just selected the option to turn it off

vchakra23 - 12-2-2008 at 03:30

Here you go sir.. the CF-RC.txt file

WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Pro-BootDisk-ENU.exe
[boot loader]
timeout=2
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
C:CMDCONSBOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

Pancake - 12-2-2008 at 03:32

Give me a while while I look at your log..

vchakra23 - 12-2-2008 at 03:32

Actually.. I did notice one thing.. Not a single popup since I ran the exe file and sent u the initial log.. thats never happened since I've had the issue..

I see a popup every 5 mins and then once I have one.. its starts accelerating and I hope other much more often.

Could something have been fixed instrinsicly...

Pancake - 12-2-2008 at 03:41

Please download HijackThis to your desktop.. http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/HJTInstall.exe

Alternate link
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HJTInstall.exe

This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:Program FilesTrend MicroHijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:Program FilesTrend MicroHijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

================================

Please copy this page to *Notepad* and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.
1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Open *notepad* and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe which is on the Desktop.

[bad img]http://users.pandora.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/images/CFScript.gif[/bad img]

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:ComboFix.txt

Please copy and paste the ComboFix.txt along with a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply please.

*Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall*

Is your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version if required.

Updating Java:

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u4 (http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp).

The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.

Click the

UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) to get the critical updates.

If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

========================================================

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes
kill bits in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here (http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/A/ActiveX_control.html)
You can download SpywareBlaster here here (http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=2859&file=11&evp=61b0e8ad41924a03c37615f4682b4cef)
SpywareBlaster tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial49.html)

Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the bad webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).

Download it here (http://www.spywarewarrior.com/uiuc/res/ie-spyad.exe)

Hosts file:
Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them. In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages. We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages. However, it can slow down certain computers. This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here (http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm). Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial51.html)
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen) Click run In the dialog box, type services.msc hit enter, then locate dns client Highlight it, then double-click it. On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual. Click ok

Keep Anti Virus Software updated - Most AVs will update automatically, but if not I would recommend making updating the AV the first job every time the PC is connected to the internet. An AV that is using defs that are seven days old is not going to be much protection. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. See here (http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/security/fwvirus.html) to choose one.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial60.html) webpage out.
Here (http://www.snapfiles.com/Freeware/security/fwfirewall.html) are some Vista compatible firewalls also.

Know What You're Installing
Check the source.
To avoid malware, make sure your software comes from a reputable source. Be particularly suspicious of sponsored software (software that relies on advertising) or software that claims to speed up your Internet connection.

Use Custom Install.
If you feel comfortable with software installation, you can choose Custom Install (as opposed to Typical Install). Custom Install allows you to select only the software components you wish to install, and leave out others (such as potential spyware).

Modify Security Settings (Internet Explorer 6)
To reduce the risk of installing malware, you can set Internet Explorer to high security mode. To do so:

Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools > Internet Options.
On the Internet Options screen, select the Security tab, then select the Internet icon (if it is not already selected).
Under Security level for this zone, click Default Level. Set the slider to High.
Note: You may have to lower the security level to view certain Web sites.
Next, select the Trusted Sites icon. Under Security level for this zone, click Default Level. Set the slider to Medium.
Click Apply, then OK to save the changes.

Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List. It will save you a lot of grief, as well as money if you are thinking of purchasing. Here is the link:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
If you want to know just how effective your anti-spyware program is, or how well any of the "rogue" programs listed at the above link work, check this for an independent comparison of several anti-spyware programs:

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/asw-test-guide.htm

Let us know if we have not resolved your problem. Otherwise, you are good to go.
Happy and Safe Surfing!

Everything we deleted all stemmed from these two virus files:

C:WINDOWSsystem32driverscore.cache.dsk
C:WINDOWSsystem32driversslnthall.sys
