Lent
marymary100 - 3-3-2009 at 18:32

Mostly we "do" something for Lent but I found this article quite interesting - giving up Facebook etc for Lent.

How easy would you find it to give the modern methods of communication for any religious observance?

How dependent have you become on these methods of keeping in touch?

Would this be a real sacrifice?

Is it is worthy Lenten task?

Give up email, internet ,aaagggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhroffle

John_Little - 3-3-2009 at 19:29

Hmmmmm.......I suppose it depends on what Lent is about.

I know the theory. Its about self denial and sacrifice. I think that giving up the web, specially some of my special forums, would be difficult and a sacrifice for me.

marymary100 - 3-3-2009 at 19:34

I'd find it hard to give up my "friends".

John_Little - 3-3-2009 at 19:36

Right on.

Badgergirl - 3-3-2009 at 20:22

I didn't know it was lent.

I've considered some "time off" from the internet for a while. I may dissapear for a few weeks, but it's 'nowt to do with lent.

I just think I need to clear my head of too much media, clear out the cache so to speak!

marymary100 - 3-3-2009 at 20:25

Ikwym - somehow I keep coming back online though.

It is terribly addictive - or rather the people are.

If it works right, you can reach a level of communication you cant get elsewhere.

You get to know peoples idiosyncrisis. ;)

BTW my spell check doesn't recognise idiosyncrisis?

No - it would not be a worthy Lenten task for me - because I can live without all this techy stuff quite easily. Now if you asked me to give up reading books or listening to good music - that would really be a sacrifice !!

nowt is a word I use so from this I suspect you are from the Midlands area:)

I use the internet in my service to the Lord, so giving it up would contradict the meaning of Lent.

This year, I gave up bacon.

It's amazing how much I find myself thinking about bacon, now that it is now off limits to me.;)

waffler - 4-3-2009 at 04:05

Now that is something i could give up

janet - 4-3-2009 at 09:18

I'd lose my job so that'd be rather counterproductive.

Rather than give up something, I try to do more for lent, though giving up things tends to be part of the observance - often things on the spur of the moment, "Do I really need that/to do that/whatever?"

Leaving aside that I use the internet quite a bit for my job, I'm very dependent on it for a lot of support, so giving it up atm would be a big sacrifice and not one I would be willing to consider.

John_Little - 4-3-2009 at 12:19

How are we doing with the old "zzzzzzzzzzzz", Swish?

Mary2 - 4-3-2009 at 13:03

There's parts of it I would be happy to give up but mostly it's a way of relaxing as well as sharing opinions and the minutiae of life.

John_Little - 4-3-2009 at 13:39

Its not always that relaxing. It can get quite tense; at times.

hey maybe I'm giving up sleep for Lent? ;)
The sleeping pills I have are GREAT but are a short term solution for a long term problem and I'm trying to limit myself to one a week (I've got through five in the last week so FAIL on that front, but in my defence it has been quite a difficult week for various reasons)

I certainly am not!
Well, Cumbria is the Midlands..if you are talking about England and Scotland anyway.

LSemmens - 5-3-2009 at 14:40

I'd like to give up working, but I can't see that happening because I'm supposed to be retired now and I can't work out how I ever found the time to go to work!
