What is the one thing that would 'turn you off' from religion ?
Mine is the current Arch Bishop of Canterbury - such an egoist !
He will live a long life though - God would be too scared to invite him into Heaven !
Spending several hours reading all the stuff on the web regarding all the Wars which get caused over religion.
Thats enough to put any sane person off the subject
EDIT: I'd say years of reading
So those of us who are still religious are insane?
Thanks, TCFW. Yet again - those of us who have religious beliefs are expected to show respect for those who do not, but are not accorded that same respect in return.
A definition of Religion may be appropriate as I am not particularly fond of the carry on over a game of football which is a religion to some! So that turns me off!
Good luck, Leigh - a lot of scholars have refused to try to define it. Famously, Smart said that instead of defining religion, it would be better to
look at the dimensions involved in them.
However, for definitions, dictionary.com offers among others:
1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs.
I know that it's a can of worms. I have never considered myself to be "religious" nor would I say the I am a "Christian". I follow the tenets of the Christian Religion but leave it to others to determine whether I am a Christ one!
Well, apparently we're both insane, anyway.
Yup - the message is clear.
Respect for other's beliefs is given by some of us and not by others.
I'd agree there - which is why I teach some of the things I do. But it's not a sentiment shared by all....
My point is I think religion is evil and religious belief a complete denial of humanity. So in the same way that I condemn those commit evil elsewhere, so I do with religion.
15 mins with an evangelical christian is enough to intensley dislike that particular religious person. It's just so rude!
Otherwise, any religion that claims to know what "God" in his bearded* glory wants us to do puts me off big time.
I guess, "Holy Texts" turn me off.
Though I'm happy to read books by spiritual people.
*He seems to have a beard in a lot of religions. The Green Man has a very fetching one made of leaves, and Jehova seems to have stolen his from Santa. (At least, in all the piccys's I've seen!).
Jehova gets his from a much earlier idea than Santa
THough to be honest, one of the people who was a great support to me in the last year is a very right wing, new denomination Christian - I've heard him preach and I'd not like to be on the receiving end of that if I wasn't prepared for it, but I've also never known him to do it when it wasn't appropriate (when I heard him do it, it was in his church).
But a *person* is unlikely to put me off a religion - particularly a large one. If that were the case, I'd have been put off most professions that I've come into contact with - because I can't think of one profession that doesn't have at least one bad apple in it.
What is important to me in a religion is the tenets of that religion.
