no i haven't, can you believe that, i'm an idiot.

Don't think you can upgrade from XP to 7, though.

At least, officially, you can't.

Either way, you're going to lose your programs, files, and settings.

The only way to put windows 7 onto a hard drive that has xp on it
is to completely wipe the xp off the drive and then it will lay down windows 7 as though it is a clean drive you don't have to put vista on first. though it will upgrade from vista what it does it puts vista into a folder called old windows and once you have windows 7 up and running with all programmes installed you can delete the folder called old windows and reclaim about 6gigs more space on your drive i think it will do this with xp as well jmb

finchart - 13-7-2011 at 13:34

So, it sounds like you found what you needed to know.:)

Katzy, you don't need third party programs all you need is WET:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/windows-easy-transfer

I've used this plenty of times to transfer (and back up) data for Windows, works well with Vista to boot.

As to installing it John Barnes has it right, there is no direct upgrade path for XP you have to wipe XP and install Win 7. The three licence version of Win 7 was a time limited offer, to get the cheapest version of Win 7 you need to buy a per computer OEM licence (it's tied to one machine technically). You can get the retail version which includes both x64 (64bit) and x86 (32bit) versions whereas OEM is limited to the version you bought.

Just as a, slight, digression, is the machine you are looking to upgrade to W7 capable of handling it?

finchart - 14-7-2011 at 16:47

yes, the pc is ok to upgrade,LS and thanks for the link Faolan, in fact thanks everybody you are, as usual, brilliant:)))

As an aside, Finchart, I like the looks of your Avatar, mate, what is it? (Make and model) At first thought I thought it a mixing desk, but then I noticed the keyboard, So I'm guessing some sort of synth, maybe an older Moog?

finchart - 31-7-2011 at 18:08

hi LS
its a Moog moduler synthisizer dating from the 1980, keith emerson used one all the time, they cost about 20,000 then.
the only time i have seen one is in a glass case, in a museum.

LSemmens - 2-8-2011 at 03:39

I thought as much. I've actually seen, and heard the real thing way back in the 70's in my last year at High School. It fired my imagination, but not to the point where I ever considered owning one. The next electronic music making gadget that did excite me was the early Amiga computers, they were on my long list of first 'puter to buy. Eventually I ended up with a PC (8086 processor) and it was many years before I ever got back to finding something that would perform as well as that early Moog. Now, of course, you wrist watch is almost more capable.

I am a guitarist, not a keyboard player, BTW.

finchart - 4-8-2011 at 08:34

quite agree LS, i started of with a spectrum, 16k, the power, will the program load? then i got a commadore 64, which was a massive leap, floppt dicks, the a 100khz pc, with internet modam, i remember waiting half the night for one porno picture to download:)))))))

finchart - 4-8-2011 at 08:36

Yes, the Red hot Russian babes site was quite slow in those days, or so I've been told. lips_sealed

LSemmens - 5-8-2011 at 02:25

Just as a thought, Giron, I can understand the Red and the Russian Babes bit, but how can any of them be hot? From my understanding no part of Russia could be anything but freezing cold! It certainly does not rate as even slightly tropical! nananana

giron - 5-8-2011 at 08:39

It's a porno site and the ' hot ' refers to their arousing sexual appeal, or so I've been told.

Be careful, Giron, or you'll be in the cold showers, and not here! Mrs Giron will do it!!!! lips_sealed
