Trouble with AVG free 8
SRD - 15-5-2008 at 13:44

Since replacing AVG free 7.* with AVG free 8 I find I can't access video links that are embedded using as well as sites that have been available before e.g. http://uk.geocities.com/davenhel_uk/spinners.html

Is there a decent free replacement for AVG free?

John_Little - 15-5-2008 at 13:53

Just checked and that's what I've got here - or rather the AVG 7. At home I've got a different one that is just as good. I'll post it tonight. But, in the meantime, it must just be a setting. Does that one have a firewall too?

SRD - 15-5-2008 at 14:04

Support for AVG free 7 is being withdrawn and it is being replaced with version 8, so far it's a pain the ar$e, scans take twice as long, loading any app takes twice as long, linking to any sites on the net take at least twice as long and an excess of links is being blocked, because it's free there's no support so I'm looking to change my AV.

AV8 has a few extra features which if you don't need you can turn off.

Go to components and see what each one does- you can turn them off if you don't want them.

or go to the forum here

Thanks craig but that doesn't really answer my question.

I know but I have found AVG8 better than 7 without the issues you have (after some tweaking).

Don't go to Avast though because that caused no end of problems for me.

I have Avira AntiVir Personal (free version) running on one of my PC's, feels fast enough.

Not many free AV's have a support forum, but they do.

I believe you John, honest.

hawklord - 15-5-2008 at 18:26

hi simon,

why not just re-install avg7.5, it doesn't run out till december 31st,
by then all the little niggly bugs should have been fixed

SRD - 15-5-2008 at 19:48

Cos installing AVG 8 uninstalled and deleted AVG 7.5.

DMWright - 15-5-2008 at 20:33

Then why not download and re-install 7.5?

http://download-west.avg-antivirus.net/avgdownload/avg75free.exe

hawklord - 15-5-2008 at 20:35

thats ok, just download it from here (its a direct download)
uninstall avg8 and install avg7,

http://download.oldversion.com/avg441a944.exe (it is version 7.5)

from here if you want to have a look

SRD - 15-5-2008 at 20:52

Thank you gentlemen, I shall try that.

hawklord - 15-5-2008 at 21:01

i forgot to mention that every now and then you get a stupid nag screen asking to update to v8, i've not hunted the source down yet - but i will,
(i reverted back to v7.5, but used a back up .exe to reinstall)

Now you're blinding me with b*llshit. confused2

hawklord - 15-5-2008 at 21:58

sos, its just a pop up generated from grisoft (the makers of avg) asking to upgrade to v8, just click on the red X to get rid of it - its not a problem - or a sign of infection, just an advisory

I tried downloading 7.5 from the sources you suggested. I uninstalled 8 and installed the download, no problem except that windows then told me it was out of date, I tried to update it and AVG were having none of it "This product is no longer supported please upgrade to version 8". So I've re-installed v8. No problems so far <touch wood smiley> but the AVG site has been "unavailableble as servers too busy" a couple of times this morning so maybe others are having problems.

LSemmens - 16-5-2008 at 12:18

I'm still running 7.5 and can update either manually or automatically with no troubles.

Interestingly enough, the nags for AVG 8.0 only appear to point me to the fully paid version, so I've stayed with 7.5 until all support is withdrawn.

Daz - 16-5-2008 at 19:43

I'm running Avira's AntiVir on the lappy at the moment, and it seems ok.

I'm also running Avast! on another 'puter, and again that seems ok too.

Still prefer my previous AV though, which was Eset's NOD32. But I can't afford the renewal ATM.... :(

LSemmens - 17-5-2008 at 12:40

Am performing a manual update (Priority) as I type.

But have you installed and uninstalled 8? When 8 was installed it un-installed 7.5, anti-root kit and AVGas and I had to uninstall Ewido that I had been running, I wouldn't be surprised if, even though it was uninstalled, it left something behind to prevent, or at least make difficult, a return to apps they no longer wish to support.

hawklord - 17-5-2008 at 15:31

Well bully for you, all I can tell you is what happened to me.

hawklord - 17-5-2008 at 16:03

only trying to help,
i really don't think there is a 'switch' somewhere to stop you using an older version, if there was why does mine run ok,

even tried on the vm's

Sorry HL, I was being a little facetious, but 8.5 seems to be working Ok now, maybe the clean up I had (CCleaner and a defrag) sorted out the problems that I was having and although it now takes longer to run the scan it doesn't take up as much processor (I think it's the processor) so I can continue working whilst it's running.

hawklord - 17-5-2008 at 17:25

its ok,

its the end product and whether it works is what matters

So? was there so many problems with 8.0, and subsequent patches that we are up to version 8.5 after only a week! Wow!
