You don't say what version of Windows you are using, so try this HP/Compaq Link and see if reinstalling the keyboard drivers helps...?

Or it might be just what the message says, and your KB does indeed have an issue that Windows has detected...

Sorry its *ahem* Windows 95

i have tried other drives but the same thing happens

cheers

It's been a very long time since I used Win95.....!

What I do remember though is that it was somewhat flakey at times!

If reinstalling the Keyboard Drivers doesn't help, I'd probably try a fresh load of Windows... But you may not want to go down that route... (You'd need to backup any important files before proceeding!!!)

The thing is i can't get the thing to recognise hard drives.

When in dos i type C: it does not show a drive.

After booting i just get the error code mentioned.

Maybe i shoud just get a new one lol

Thanks anyway mate

Hmm, maybe it's the HDD with the problem then....? Bad sectors etc?

Don't give up... Others may an idea...

A machine of that age is really going well to still be working. Do you happen to have the original install disks? A fresh install of W95 may resolve the problem but I wouldn't be too hopeful. As you can't see the HDD in DOS one of two things may have occurred: The C: drive has been mapped to another letter (try B: or D:) or, more likely, the HDD is the cause of the "304 - Keyboard or System Unit Failure" message. New boxes are very cheap these days, treat yourself!

Yes i think i will get a new laptop

I don't have the original disks.

When in dos if i type B: it does work but if i check the dir it just lists whats on the floppy??

Ah well never mind.

It stills annoys me though :smash)

B: was a long shot, normally DOS does allow you to refer to your Floppy by either A: or B: - this goes back to the days where storage was measured in Kilobytes!

hmmm...

its amazing a win95 laptop is still working, you say you only use it for wordprocessing, then why not give linux a try, fluxbuntu will be good for your machine.

you can download fluxbuntu here: http://fluxbuntu.org/

ofcourse it is completely your decision t migrate to linux or not, if your not comfortable with the switch over just ignore this post :Dlips_sealed

Well i would certainly give it a try if i could get the laptop working

I have ordered a new cmos battery as i think the one in the laptop is dead.

I hope this will work
