Need Help - IE and COM Surrogate
DeWitch - 11-1-2008 at 02:23

for the last couple of weeks many times when I use the media player I get this COM surrogate error when it closes
Now tonight while at site I started getting this other debug error and it shut down the page
I tried doing a system restore to the end of last month but it didn't help
Am using XP Pro and IE6

That particular error is usually down to a faulty codec.

It might just be best to reinstall Windows Media Player, coz that'll replace the codecs, too.

Even better, remove Windows Media Player and use Irfanview! :D

Have a look here: Comm Surrogate this seems to be a common problem.
In this case it refers to Vista, but I think you'll find that XP has similar issues.

Thank you for replying -
I was thinking of reinstalling media player -
What is Irfanview?
and if I use something else than media player am I going to mess everything up since I have media center on my PC?

Hi there Leigh
thanks
yes I did a search online about it but just seemed to get more confused
maybe cuz it was late and the rum & coke;)
Have been debating putting Vista back on here too
wish I could have both but my Vista is an upgrade disk and I don't want to mess this thing up worse than it already is since the warranty was up a couple of weeks ago:{
Oh boy here we go again

VLC Player is another excellent alternative to the crap that is Windows Media...

Or even try Media Player Classic

And a very good FREE Codec pack is.... CCCP

I asked before though that since my PC has Media Center would these other players to mess it up?

Sorry DW, I missed where you mentioned that...

Do you mean you've got Windows Media Centre, rather than XP? Or something else?

AFAIK, VLC won't mess up anything, and certainly I doubt the Codec pack will, but I've not used WMC myself, and have only come across it once before for a brief time, so I can't say for sure, but I doubt it TBH....

DeWitch, you and I have a similar approach: cautious, with specific questions for confidence before you do anything. :D

I expect someone who knows will answer. If not now, then probably tomorrow.

[EDIT: Daz posted while I was composing. It's great to have someone like him, who drops in to do tech questions while it is that late in the UK.]

And a lovely OS it is, too.

Wouldn't trade mine for a FREE upgrade to the Vista equiv.

I have learned over the years to ask & be sure before doing something:)

That's a week longer than I would have had it on MY baby.

:D

I use Media Centre, too. I NEVER use WindowsMediaPlayer, though. I just abhor almost everything about it, to be honest.

Thanks Katzy
I guess I never checked into any players after having quicktime try to take over everything and do not like realplayer either so have always just stuck with MediaPlayer
Can't figure most of them out anyway:}

I heppen to detest RealPlayer, too.

As long as you have Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative installed (for the codecs), Irfanview will play Real and QT files, too.As well as audio files, pictures and loads of other stuff, too.

The only thing you'll need WMP for, then, is online streaming of wmv files.
