It's chick season
Theravad - 28-7-2010 at 16:32
Several chicks hatched today - unfortunately mother hen for this lot died last night so this lot are under a lamp in the utility room. Was thinking
of stuffing them under another broody hen but when we lifted her we heard chirps and so the eggs she has been hoarding are starting to hatch too

My little silkie bantam has 4 young babies as well. I just love hatching new chicks.
They are adorable Si

It is a great time - normally these are kept warm by Mum however we have had to place these under a lamp and in the house - the noise tonight is going
to be interesting.
What is a shame is that many of them turn out to be cockerels and we have three of those already and find it difficult to re-home them
I love silkies (presumably yours is one of the little white ones with a comical hair style) but unfortunately for our silkie the boys do not leave her
alone so she skulks around avoiding the hassle.

My house is always full of chirps and tweets. We just hatched 6 turkeys. I know a lot of people find them ugly and odd looking, but they are so calm
and serene compared to ducks and chickens. One of my geese hatched 6 goslings a few weeks back too.
My silkies are the little black ones. The rooster is a vey good mum too lol. Heres a pic of the little ones.

That rooster looks like a cochin not a silkie? Lovely all the same.
Glad to report all the one which lost their mother are still with us and healthy this morning ( thanks to a constant 35degress from the heat lamp).
LSemmens - 29-7-2010 at 11:02
That might be in their future, but ain't it a bit cruel to tell them that now?
scholar - 29-7-2010 at 11:51
They are so cute!
Theravad - 29-7-2010 at 11:51
Well, if they turn out to be cockerels ...
Dreamweaver - 30-7-2010 at 05:57
Your right Si, I get confuzzled between the silkies and the pekins, I can't have silkies here, the winter is a bit severe for them.
That is "mommy " in the picture

Yep it's a Chicken

Here's a link to a chicken breed
identification chart site.
There is so much information on it, I haven't worked through it. Obviously, you don't have all the information (for example, what the eggs look
like). And I don't know much about chickens. Does this help?

If it has feathers and a beak then it's a budgie!
scholar - 11-11-2010 at 14:15
Pest, Leigh calls any bird a budgie!
I think he would say of a pteradactyl, "It looks like a budgie."
giron - 11-11-2010 at 19:52
It looks like a large cock to me.

Naturally, it was nothing to do with me.

Redwolf5150 - 13-11-2010 at 01:00
BTW, these were Democrat turkeys so I stopped and let them cross the country road I was driving on.
If they had been republican turkeys they'd have been McNuggets.
waffler - 13-11-2010 at 01:07
They all taste the same to me
