Some ill educated Americans didn't recognise the words and thought it was inciting revolution and one example of why the radio station should be defunded.

When I lived and taught in America, the pupils in my school memorised the Declaration in 7th Grade.

Don't all Americans know the words?

I guess they'd ask how many Brits know the Magna Carta... ;)

Gotta lurve Yanks. :D

They taught the Magna Carter in my school in the US as well, the significance of it at any rate.

Each line, taken out of context, could easily be misconstrued.

(47) All forests that have been created in our reign shall at once be disafforested. River-banks that have been enclosed in our reign shall be treated similarly.

Here, we could say that this line means that we can cut down trees of of the forest without any thought to global warming. I wonder where this line came from? :D

My experience is that it is not widely known, first-hand. The reasons for declaring independence are usually just summarized as a desire for self-government and a desire not to be taxed for Britain's benefit.
