Karl`s PC Help Forums

Please take a moment to read......
Dreamweaver - 27-12-2014 at 03:07

We are considering moving the forum as this platform is nearing its end.
I don't know if you realised but we have had to switch off forum membership for a long time now due to hundreds of one post (advertising) wonders.

The question now is, what type of new board is wanted?

Some thought's from Theravad..

Mobile view (for smart phones)
Customisable appearance / themes
Subscription and notifications ( email, rss )
Social media integration (facebook, twitter etc).

And then we could down-select some options.
Feel free with any helpful ideas for what type of board is needed and what you may want from it...

We certainly need some way to allow new members in, without filling up with adverts posing as posters. (I do not mind ads which sponsor a site, provided they do not hog memory.)

Will it work for KF to continue to be governed by Dreamweaver? I understand KarlsForums originated after Karl was treated badly in another online setting, and he set up this house where all were to be treated fairly, according to the written rules of the forum, which do not allow for posts that are hateful or abusive or which invade another person's privacy.

With this being the case, I hope that KF does not join another online community which would take over its sovereignty, so to speak.

Need to stay away from facebook etc etc

Quaver - 27-12-2014 at 06:59

Are any of the free forum hosting an option?

Why? The social media side of things is where the future probably is. People who are interested in, say, a recipe do a search on Google. They are directed to a site because it has the info. We need something that allows those searching to find an open page . At the moment only signed in members can see beyond first three posts and no-one new can join. FB and Twitter would only be an advert for the site.

Yes. Dot is gathering opinions from all current members before making any changes. We need more members and more posting space so culls of old posts aren't necessary.

John_Little - 27-12-2014 at 10:30

Dont mind, really. This all works for me on my mobile and tablet and laptop and all.

As long as I can be informed of what is happening do what is best for both Dreamweaver and the forum jmb

This and BC are the only forum I go on, and BC is full of abuse and keyboard warriors and trolls it is not to every taste .

I'm hoping that's a misunderstanding re. free hosted forums

Open source forums software , yes such as MyBB , simplemachines , and the latest from phpBB 3.1.2
. But free hosted forums , definitely not advisable re. here today gone tomorrow .

Responsive styles are probably better than main style plus a separate mobile theme .

marymary100 - 27-12-2014 at 20:45

It's an option, not necessarily Dot's preferred one. I did suggest that you and Katsy might have some experience in this area *cough*.

sceptre - 27-12-2014 at 20:51

Ah ! but we're biased ;)
Although we might agree on paid versions such as xenfora
But the downside there is cost with updating versions and extra plug ins that might be wanted .

Best advise I can give is Don't touch VB now with the proverbial Barge pole .

This version of XMB will continue to work until hosts upgrade PHP but 5.4 and over will be dire for the current board .

I have already made suggestions to Dot regarding some "nuts and bolts" as this discussion came about from a suggestion of a forum member. I feel that we need to try and divest Dot of some of the more mundane tasks like approving new memberships and the like. Provided every one is amenable and can offer some viable options, I would be supportive of any improvements to our service. I am, unfortunately, not in a position to advise on the platform or coding as it is outside my area of expertise. That said, if I can assist, I am more than willing to learn, with a lot of hand holding.

I'm happy if y'all are happy, just keep us informed.

I come here for you guys, so as long as I can still "see" everyone I'm fine.

Most of that can be automated with modern software
with more up to date spam prevention , 1st post moderation etc.

While there will always be spammers whether human or bots ,
at least you'll have a bit of respite with a update .

Unfortunately XMB is dead in the water with even the domain name up for sale .

Don't understand the "Tekkie speak" But KF works for me, I'm happy to go with the flow. :)
