Premium Bonds

Does anyone have any luck with premium bonds ???

Absolutely, I do - all of it bad. Also, all the oil exploration wells I have drilled have been dry, my 1-old penny shares have slumped, and the island I used as my offshore bank for tax payers sank.

It's not all bad, though. I'm not a Moan U supporter. ;-)

Since we ploughed a bit of my redundancy money into them - around 10,000, we have had regular wins. But not enough to match the interest we get on the rest of the money which is a 5% 4 year bond. I reckon we get about 100 - 150 a year.

As an aside John, do they count as "savings" if you're "unemployed"?

I received an email recently that is only relevant in some places, but a good illustration of the share market.

Quote:
JUST IMAGINE..

If you had bought $1,000.00 of Qantas shares one year ago,
You would have $49.00 today!

If you bought $1,000.00 AIG shares one year ago,
You would have $33.00 today!

If you bought $1,000.00 worth of Lehman Brothers shares one year ago,
You would have $0.00 today!

BUT.... If you had purchased $1,000.00 worth of beer one year ago,
Drank all the beer, then returned the aluminium cans for recycling....
YOU WOULD HAVE RECEIVED at least $60.00!

BASED ON THE ABOVE, THE BEST CURRENT INVESTMENT PLAN IS TO
DRINK HEAVILY AND RECYCLE!

Yes. If you want income based benefit. Over 24,000 last time I heard. But I've never claimed it. I did get the contributions based benefit for the first 6 months, since then, we've been spending our savings like there is no tomorrow. And after the day after tomorrow, there won't be. allegedly.

Gosh. I'd be too scared to do that I think.

You get used to it.

I've bought 100 premium bonds about 20 years ago, and only won 10 once...

John_Little - 21-12-2012 at 13:13

You've done well for a mere 100. I had seven bonds since my 7th Birthday and none of those have ever won. Only the news ones have done any good.
