Olympics
marymary100 - 23-7-2012 at 21:25

Apparently there's some shindig down in London called the Olympics beginning shortly.

Will you be watching or avoiding?

LSemmens - 24-7-2012 at 01:19

I'll avoid! 16,200Km Avoid!:D

Totally ignoring !

John_Little - 24-7-2012 at 07:46

I'll try to ignore it but living right on top of it will mean I cant avoid it. Still, at least its never likely to ever come here again

giron - 24-7-2012 at 07:46

It might be difficult to avoid as it will be plastered all over the news.

Katzy - 24-7-2012 at 09:08

I suspect it'll be all over the media for the wrong reasons.

OK, there's security. But, I can't help but feel that this is Target #One for terrorists.

giron - 24-7-2012 at 11:51

Makes me wonder if any terrorists have managed to get jobs with G4S.

waffler - 25-7-2012 at 00:08

Do I support the Brits or the Yanks i'm STUCK IN THE MIDDLE :D

LSemmens - 25-7-2012 at 01:22

The ABC has a show called the "Gruen Transfer". The new series called Gruen Sweat is about to start.

John_Little - 25-7-2012 at 08:11

The BBC has about 24 free view channels each one with different events!

Nimuae - 25-7-2012 at 08:39

I knew that was an advantage in dumping the TV !

John_Little - 25-7-2012 at 08:41

I've given up planning what to watch. Its too complicated. I just flick through the channels now.

marymary100 - 25-7-2012 at 11:09

I use the Sky channel guide for what is on between, say, 8 and 10 and then bookmark the programme that looks most interesting.

giron - 25-7-2012 at 13:40

That's all very well, but have you actually found any ' interesting ' programs ?

marymary100 - 25-7-2012 at 14:19

All in this together

- a short animated history

August - 25-7-2012 at 15:22

I'll probably end up watching some of it. The ladies football is on
here now. :D

sceptre - 25-7-2012 at 20:40

I was sorely tempted to nip up to Hampden just to watch the USA ladies in action tonight .redface

marymary100 - 25-7-2012 at 21:26

A big hoo ha about the wrong flag at Hampden earlier.

I don't remember other countries having all these gaffs. I think we just make it all too complicated.

marymary100 - 26-7-2012 at 09:00

We certainly wouldn't get the gold for Olympics planning. It all seems a bit amateurish.

August - 26-7-2012 at 13:45

It's just our media making news out of every little thing. I expect
the Olympics have been put together just as efficiently as any
other country have done it ....... and also I doubt we would hear
of other countries niggles quite so much.

marymary100 - 26-7-2012 at 14:44

You've obviously never lived in America if you think our media is critical. ;)

Can't even bare to watch their tv programmes ! ... :D
wooty

marymary100 - 26-7-2012 at 15:38

I see Romney has been criticising our preparations. What he obviously doesn't get is that is it alright for us to criticise but not for a foreign buffoon to do so...

John_Little - 26-7-2012 at 16:51

I heard he was talking out of the back end of downing street.

And I see your Prime Minister gave him a jolly good verbal birching for it.

Now if giron can just get his hands on him and use a REAL switch on him...

Link for the search engine impaired or those who don't read articles that aren't from Faux Gnus.

he British media were quick to launch into Mitt Romney in the wake of his less-than-complimentary views on London's Olympics.

The Daily Telegraph's Lucy Jones branded him a 'wazzock' after the U.S. presidential hopeful questioned Britain's desire to host the Games.
She said: 'Who does Mitt Romney think he is? I feel a glimmer of protectiveness and pride... there's one thing Romney could learn while he's in Britain this week: some manners.'

Nicholas Watt, from The Guardian, tweeted of his U-turn: 'Mitt Romney rowing back like mad on Olympics: Now says outside No 10 games to be a great success.'

Meanwhile, Paul Harris said: 'Good old Mitt. His charm offensive in the UK failed to be charming, but he really pulled off the offensive bit #gop #romney.'

James Kirkup, also from The Daily Telegraph, drew attention to Prime Minister David Cameron's response to Romney's comments.

'Mr Romney made his name salvaging the Salt Lake City Winter Games in 2002, an achievement he may think qualifies him to comment on preparations for London 2012,' he said.
'In the context of Mr Romney's glittering resumé, one of Mr Cameron's (faintly defensive) comments bears particular attention: "We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world."
'Of course it’s easier if you hold an Olympic games in the middle of nowhere.'
'Some cynics thought that the "middle of nowhere" comment could just be a swipe at Salt Lake City, which is quite near the middle of, er, Utah. Terrible people, cynics.'

Boris and Willard

delanti - 27-7-2012 at 14:25

Love those personal blogs , they are just one persons opinion. I could have a blog and comment that I think the English reaction to MItts comments was a over reaction and they seem rather anal having their shortcomings pointed out by an American. Using the excuse of having the Olympics is such a busy place as London is not Mitts fault, the Mayor apparently wanted it there, so live with it.

But then again, even though I have been to England (once) and having feverishly read Girons entertaining commentary on here for years, I still would not consider myself an expert on English life.

Most bloggers have their own personal axe to grind one way or another which makes their writings biased toward their own ideology. waveysmiley

marymary100 - 27-7-2012 at 14:34

Boris was only elected quite late into the process of the UK trying to be the hosts of the Games. Boris is actually considered a national embarrassment over here as he gaffs at least as much as MR has.

the bear - 27-7-2012 at 15:29

It all makes news and sells news papers, its a bit like watching to se what they do next :P

That's true, but at least he hasn't done the country any real harm, unlike Cameron, Osborn and the rest of the Tory numpties.

marymary100 - 28-7-2012 at 07:52

It's been extended by 7 days due to the length of the opening ceremony...

giron - 28-7-2012 at 20:11

Closing ceremonies, though it WOULD have been nice for them to have shot down Romney's plane as it left British airspace.

:D

giron - 28-7-2012 at 21:55

Never mind, perhaps the Israelis will shoot him down instead ?

John Barnes - 29-7-2012 at 00:16

2012 Olympics =£9 billion down the drain IMO, just when can least afford it. jmb

giron - 29-7-2012 at 16:32

Are we absolutely sure that the entire £9 billion has been spent on the Olympics ?

I've heard unconfirmed reports that some of the money has been given to the bankers in order to fund their bonuses.
