Quarter Million Post Competition!!
scholar - 24-12-2007 at 04:59

I was thinking about what some of us were doing exactly one year ago. At this hour, I was posting.

Here's one quote, about guessing how long was left in the contest:

I'd have thought more than 12 hours, but seeing as scholar has made nearly 200 posts in 24 hours, it's starting to get difficult to tell. confused2

And another:

Giron was exaggerating, of course. But I was posting a lot. :D It was great fun.

Exaggerating? are you sure?

scholar - 24-12-2007 at 07:33

I'm pretty sure. Giron did a screencapture of the highest score he saw for me, which was under 400. At the time he said "400 of them were made by scholar, " I had yet to make a number of the posts that were later part of my high score.

I'm sure you can picture Karl's amusement. Would he have been smiling, or perhaps even laughing, when he observed all the activity the contest stirred up? (Not that he stayed up all night, of course. He mentioned when he was signing off. He also said his software would keep track of the winner, if it happened in his absence.):D

LSemmens - 24-12-2007 at 13:07

When do you think we'll reach the 500,000 mark?

giron - 24-12-2007 at 22:28

That's some years off, Leigh.

Unless, of course, scholar manages to make 400 posts every day! shocked_yellow

scholar - 25-12-2007 at 01:33

The original point was to tell about, and discuss, the quarter million post competition.

I posted into it again to bring it up for the sake of the happy memories it brings back.:D

I hope that Karlsforums does continue to 500,000 posts. greengrin.waveysmiley

If you care to read through a number of the posts, do notice the post numbers, which were invisible at the time.

Karl must have been enjoying himself greatly when he would speak of it getting closer, and closer--when the winning post was still hundreds away! greengrin greengrin That would have meant DAYS away, if we had not been posting at a greater-than-usual rate.:P:P:P

I like to remember Karl as enjoying his forum all the time. Karl and his beloved "Dottie stood side by side at the helm of the ship.

There's plenty of quality, there. But, it's an online game, of some sort.

Warrior Cats, whatever that is.

During the competition, some of us emphasized quantity. I think I told every short joke I could think of, and most posts were no longer than a sentence or two. I produced hundreds of posts in one day, at a time when the entire KF typically produced something like half that many.

In those days, we had a greater number of active posters. Karl himself attracted people to the forum, and many people dropped by the first time to get help with Windows 98 problems, and stayed because they liked the people here.

Who's making book on when we hit the magic number?

scholar - 4-8-2014 at 21:26

I'll offer this opinion--if there is a half-million post competition with a prize, and the information goes out to all on the KF members, the date will be moved forward.greengrin

LSemmens - 5-8-2014 at 09:32

Only if Scholar is unemployed by then.....;) nananana

marymary100 - 10-7-2015 at 23:05

Quaver - 10-7-2015 at 23:23

Sometime this year I think!:banana)

Maybe it was archived and only mods can see it properly?

Anyhow Charles, we think giron is no more.

Who'd have thought that 8 years later we'd be near the half million? Specially with so many people abandoning the old forum format in favour of facebook etc.

LSemmens - 17-11-2015 at 23:45

If faceache could emulate the forum format where you could isolate each group then it might replace various fora. I detest seeing what the cat puked up or what someone's last meal looked like. Not to mention the Spelling!!!!!

Since I'm raving about spelling, I fired off a quick note to my daughter last night because her youngest has started Kindy and the teacher posts their activities on "Storypark" (sorta like instagram). Nothing wrong with that, but, an early childhood educator who does not know the difference between to, too, and two is an absolute disgrace! What hope has the net generation got?

scholar - 2-12-2015 at 22:20

I stopped by, here, to review some of this thread, and it may have been trimmed smaller than I remember (that is, smaller than was left after a previous trim).

I'll add some of what has disappeared, IIRC:

The totals of posting was masked, and a prize--a USB memory stick--was to be given to whomever happened to hit the 250,000 mark. Several members were making quite a few posts, but Giron was amused that my own total posts for the day was in the hundreds (he mentioned a large figure, which was more than I thought I had posted; as you know, the 24-hour-total rolls over as time passes, and I didn't do a screen capture when I could have done so. I'm thinking he might have said I made 451 posts).

As it worked out, I missed the 250,000 mark by one post. I'm trying to remember who actually won on the exact mark. Giron, perhaps? Karl and Dot conferred and decided to give duplicate prizes to the post just before and the post immediately after, which resulted in my inclusion as a prizewinner. I'm trying to remember who the other prizewinner was. Delanti, was it you?

It was my first-ever USB thumb drive, and it had a hole so one could wear it on one's neck, or loop it to a key chain. It had a catchy name, too. Was it Gizmo? It meant more to me than most of my computer stuff because of the happy circumstances by which I got it.:D;)

According to Giron, it was 451, I think.

In the days leading up to the quarter million, I was regularly posting more, myself, than all of KF usually averaged. And several people were very actively posting too, but not in such quantity.

John_Little - 4-12-2015 at 09:35

I think it will take a lot longer to do the million. I posted more when I was at work, strangely enough. Still, a journey of half a million posts starts with a single submit.

Quaver - 4-12-2015 at 10:54
