My mother used to work in the Salvation army pcking sheds where they sort all the donated goods for re-sale. It was attached to a men's shelter. Many of the men were well educated. Some had had problems with alcohol, Others just had a breakdown and walked out of their life. Of course ther were also those who were there of necessity i.e ill educated and unable to gain employment, some where also handicapped, but many were just like you and I.

I will ask him LS. We meet again on Sept 2nd. I can't supply a link because, as I said, it is just a small local group meeting in a pub - no PCs involved. LOL. The homeless guy is about 40+ and has contributed some lovely work over the last year, usually about nature. He is quite a well educated guy and always clean and neat. Don't know how he came to be homeless - but he seems a really happy soul.

I agree, Mary, good decision.

Is it possible to post a link to the winning entry, Nim? We've seen yours, and your description of his has piqued my interest. We, SWMBO and I, had much to do with homeless youth in a previous life and would love to see his entry.

It was a local one - a writers group that I belong to, we meet on the first Tuesday of each month in rather nice hostelry. They allow us the exclusive use of their conservatory for the evening.

The owners suggested having the competition and offered to provide the prizes. !st was a meal for two, 2nd a bottle of Champagne, and 3rd a bottle of wine. We may be making it an annual event.

Some of the entries were brilliant. The winner was a poem about being homeless (written by a homeless guy!) - more than one person had tears in their eyes when it was read.

(As he didn't have anyone to share the 'meal for two', the owners are letting him have two meals for one instead.)
Good decision!

Nimeau, it was a fabulous piece of writing, how could it not get a prize.
You are very daring even submiting your work, I've often thought of it but would find the rejection hard to live with.

Well done, savour your prize. :wav)

Very best regards, the Bear

Thanks - I was really surprised, as well as pleased, (LOL) as some of the other entries were superb and seemed more professional.
