Would it really surprise anyone that MS will be given a "grant" [gratis] from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (which is the largest private foundation in the world) so that Bill can write down from taxes even more of his fortune!

When all is said and done why would anyone ever think that the one and only product that EVER mattered to MS was making money (as opposed to making software that worked well, etc.,).

When you have one of the world's largest monopolies you can afford to hire the absolutely best con men/woman on the planet to see that your coffers are filled to the brim with all kinds of tax shelters/gimmicks & that you can afford to 'induce' politicians to create them for you.

In the USA there are so called 'lemon laws' for consumers that apply to new cars that come out of the factory so defective that they can't be repaired (you get a refund). Hasn't anyone ever wondered why there are no such laws for software/OSs. Pretty simple really: the 'nice' folks at Redmond wouldn't allow that.

Microsoft's last gasp/last hurrah before it fades into the digital world's dust bin of irrelevance (at least for the home user; I don't think the mercantile world can ever live without it). After all, consistent long term survey stats show that most people use their PC's OSs (and lately phones) to play games (I have no idea how that thesis can be proved, OR disproved).

Yeah, the free offer came with the last update. You have to register to get it.

When I looked at a Windows laptop at Office Max, I was told I would get a free upgrade to Windows 10 when 10 comes out. He said that it would have some resemblances to XP, to appeal to people who didn't like the changes in Win 7 and Win 8.

All people who are running windows 7, and windows 8, and 8.1 can get a free download from Microsoft starting July the 29th. it is a 3 gig download so have a decent broadband. I will download it and then burn it to an ISO file to put in on a disc. This offer from Microsoft will last for one year only.
There will be no further issues of Windows 11 or 12 etc as Windows 10 will over the course of years receive a constant stream of updates, so in around 5 years time etc it could be a totally different beast than its original system today

Caveat= people on XP or Vista will have to purchase the new system around $110, whatever that is in proper money jmb:P
