Avast! for me. I am hard-wired to my ISP through a phone-modem and the telephone line, with no network, so I don't have wireless security concerns.

Linux is great. It just won't handle some of my more esoteric apps that I've spent years developing and could not be bothered re-writing.

Security: Avira, Zone Alarm, on the lappy and AVG on the Desktop all behind a Router with inbuilt firewall, NAT and WPA2.

Download the disk (Ubuntu 11.04 say) and book your PC from it and you can "try before you buy" without any impact on your system.

I also have a USB key with it installed which I can boot any PC (which allows USB boot) up for diagnostics / repair or just to operate a PC which I do not have a logon for ...

Hardware Firewall/router, Avast (Avira got too user-unfriendly) Spyware Blaster, Spybot, Ashampoo firewall and, above all, nothing private on my HD. :)

I find the barbed wire, moat and boiling tar are pretty good "putter-off-ers". And I have "Net Nanny" to stop me straying into murky waters.

Front end is ADSL2+ texas modem running routertech firware with firewall. This feeds into custom DD-WRT (ASUS board) router with iptables firewall and intrusion detection. A Ubuntu 10.04LTS server runs nagios, ids, clamav as well as acting as web and mail proxy with filtering and content scanning. DNS is routed though local dnsmasq with ruleset and subscribes to OpenDNS for a quality name service.

The wireless access point in non-SID broadcast WPA2+ with MAC authentication against a radius server (freeradius) and also runs a captive portal (WiFiDog) so sessions can be accounted and bandwidth logged. QoS is configured so the kids streaming video and audio does not impact the web browsing experience.

Phew - that is just the network front end :D

I start this thread in the hope that between us we can spot someone who may be a tad lax in this area, and thus help each other. As we know there is plenty of good free stuff out there to help in this matter.

So, to get the ball rolling.............
