I'm seriously considering Open Source for all new projects. Have just loaded Vista, and will see how that with the open source stuff goes. If all is well, I may stay there, if reliability becomes an issue, then XP SP2 may well see the light of day again. Unless, of course, I can get everything running sweetly in Linux.

No - I use the Open Source stuff (Brassio or something)

Yep, I never tick the box, haven't for years now (v6^) total waste of time, IMHO.

Like Daz, I have had Nero tell me a burned file was not a perfect copy, and yet it has played OK. :)

I'm sure we'll hear from you again if your reconnect doesn't hold up.

Using Nero, and it's validate thing...? If so, I never found that very accurate myself...

Yeah - nero 7.5 - next time I will checksum(hash) the file before I burn then copy off and hash again just to be sure. Nice to see the dual layer thing do its stuff though.

I must admit I panicked when the machine crashed and would not go again - re-plugging all the cables seems to have done the trick and the PSU is quite on RF now (actually worked some stations on 160M and 80M bands that were solid noise before :)

ps: next project is to update the old Celeron-500 server that has been running for more than 5 years - pretty reliable for an old commodity box; starting to show its age for intensive PHP/MySQL web stuff though (Horde Portal).

My main office PC has a noisey PSU - not noisy in the acoustic sense but it is missing a lot of EMC filter componant (cheap tat) and so it inteferres with my HF radio reception.

I bought a new PSU (more expensive) and also a dual layer DVD writer.

I was going to fit it together last week but did not have a spare SATA cable.

Today I had all the cables so did opened it up and replaced the PSU and DVD writer. Put it back together and it booted - for about a minute and then broke.

I have re-jiggled all the connectors and now it is back running (no post beeps for a bit) and now burning 8Gb onto a DVD as a soak test.

Looks like it may of survived :) I hope the glitch was temporary - the DVD write should be a good soak test.
