Yes, Hillary definitely likes to "pose" for me. Here she is perched on an unopened stargazer lily taking a break from feeding.

Jackie was even sitting a few feet away on The Dock of Tranquility Bay watching her while I made images. Monica isn't that social.

And, to give you an idea of how small she is, this image on my 28" design monitor, is about four times life size.

Hillary has not only warmed up to me, allowing me to get way better photos than Monica does, I swear she has actually started POSING for me.

This shot I just took was IMMEDIATELY entered in The Nature Conservancy's 2012 Digital Photo Contest as soon as I could download it from the memory card and work on it in Photoshop. And it required MINIMAL work at that.

From the wiki

The Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is 79 cm (2.83.5 in) long and has a 811 cm (3.14.3 in) wingspan. Weight can range from 2 to 6 g (0.071 to 0.21 oz), with males averaging 3.4 g (0.12 oz) against the slightly larger female which averages 3.8 g (0.13 oz).

Their nests and eggs are VERY tiny. I have yet to find one, probably because they are way up in our pines.

Yes, my usual shooting location under the crab apple is PERFECT for late afternoon sun. It just makes the iridescent feathers stand out.

I realized this evening that I actually have TWO female hummingbirds. Monica usually runs any strange ones out of The Bay.

But this evening, there were two taking turns coming down from the crap apple tree I was sitting under and feeding on the bee balm. They'd spend a few minutes feeding, then go back up in the tree and the other would go down.

I've dubbed the new one Hillary.

And, as evidenced by this photo, she is even more of a Prima Donna than Monica.

Actually, I prefer early evening light because it is more flattering to her.

This is Monica, the lone resident hummingbird of Tranquility Bay (by HER desire, not mine).

SOMETIMES she sees fit to let me photograph her.
