Are you saying, by any chance, that England's economy (and well being--perhaps its survival) is very heavily dependent on tourism,

That is one of the common arguments in favour of keeping the monarchy; but I'm not inclined to believe it. I think the main pressure is in her upbringing and the belief in the importance of the status quo. It wouldn't bother me if she abdicated but it would take something huge to overcome her own beliefs and the beliefs of those close to her. Its not dissimilar to any other cult.

Thatcher closed most of our manufacturing down, like the steelworks and the like. The current mob have sold everything else off.

So... It's probably based on wishful thinking.

I'm not sure about England's economy. The last I heard we were still the UK and another independence referendum or Brexit referendum wasn't allowed.

The UK economy relies heavily on banking, pharma, medical research and according to Wiki:

The economy of the United Kingdom is highly developed and market-oriented.[25][26] It is the fifth-largest national economy in the world measured by nominal gross domestic product (GDP), ninth-largest measured by purchasing power parity (PPP), and nineteenth-largest measured by GDP per capita, comprising 3.9% of world GDP.[27] It is the second-largest economy in the European Union by both metrics.
In 2016, the UK was the tenth-largest goods exporter in the world and the fifth-largest goods importer. It also had the second-largest inward foreign direct investment,[28] and the third-largest outward foreign direct investment.[29] The UK is one of the most globalised economies,[30] and it is composed of (in descending order of size) the economies of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

That's the question alright, and it pivots in no small part on this entity called "innovation"--it's economy by any measure is not up to par on the world stage.

One of salient questions about a monarchy, not just in England but anywhere, is whether the existence of one inhibits innovation, i. e., what are the cultural precursors that need to be in place for the motivation/drive/perseverance for a given country's ENTIRE populace to be major contributors to not only being inventive/creative/etc., but to succeed by their wits in the marketplace in the face of stiff competition.

To The Manor Born is not just some petty quip; it reflects a society wide view that some people by birthright alone are better than others. IT IS NOT SOMETHING THAT ANYONE EVER DID RE WORK TO EARN THAT STATUS.

What does England's economy rely on now. Manufacturing, Mining and Agriculture would be fairly uneconomical given the global economy that is now in force.

Are you saying, by any chance, that England's economy (and well being--perhaps its survival) is very heavily dependent on tourism, and it being perceived, especially by foreigners, as one gigantic, far flung medieval theme park, & that would take a severe hit if the monarchy no longer existed, and an economic depression would likely be the result.

You'd be amazed at the pressures that stop from abdicating! I think, though, that the farce is nearing an end - albeit slowly. Which is probably the best way to end it.

An anachronism, but our anachronism.

I'm not a Royalist, Jack. But its not her fault that she's Queen. She had greatness thrust upon her. There are worse people but also a lot more people worse off than her.

So, when the revolution comes, I'd be inclined to urge leniency

I take it that in some quarters, the expectation is that she be admired. But that begs the question as to just what she has ever done that she should be admired for.

Good looking wench, wasn't she?

(Can I get locked in the tower, for that?)
