If he had come clean, at the time, as to why they went back on that promise and explained it in some depth, all would have been infinitely better.

Moronically, he/they didn't. He would gain much kudos, if he had the balls to turn this down and, again, explain why.

I doubt he will, somehow...

It's perhaps naïve to expect honours for doing the right thing, but still...
