Lee is not the main minister, but he has been a dedicated member for years and has preached there from time to time. I don't know how much study he has had. I think the congregation is an independent one, in a poor neighborhood, and is probably struggling financially. In such a situation, the bills--electricity, gas for heat, and water--are usually paid first, and then any remuneration, repairs, etc. must come from the remainder.

The definition of church in America is quite fluid and the tax exemption status might mean it is not "church" as we would understand it. Is it scholar?

Blimey. Lee sounds like he could do with the church serving him a bit. You're right, Scholar. After all that he has done for others, he shouldn't feel bad asking for a favour or two. But then, he really shouldn't have to "ask".

P.S. with as many brothers-in-law as I have, I should mention a name, to keep them straight. This preacher's first name is Lee.

I've been so busy with other things, John--I'm sorry.

I have a brother-in-law who has been serving a church, in poverty. His health is poor, and his knees have no cartilage. He was mowing the church lawn, himself, and fell, sliding down the hill. He had to go to the Emergency Room at the hospital, where they did little for him--he is in tremendous pain. He has been living in the church (they have no residence for a pastor, and they are not paying him a salary), and doesn't want the congregation to know and pity him, so there is really no one to take care of him when he is in too much pain to take care of his needs. He did let one son know of his dilemma, and the son is with him today (the son's day off from his own job).

I'm thinking the preacher should set aside his pride, at least enough to tell a few people who would stay with him until he mends some.

He had two heart attacks a month or so ago.

Ruby had loaned him the van she drives for the day, and we needed to retrieve it, since he cannot now drive it.

One never knows the day or the hour so carpe diem, as others have said.

I'm pretty old and decrepit now but believe in growing old disgracefully .. it's such a waste of untapped potential to do otherwise if time is running out :D

Maybe John, because we are no longer "active", it happens with old age, you know. ;)
