Import and Export Email and News Accounts using Outlook Express
by Karl Davis
Hard drives and computers can without any warning break down and stop working and after you get it repaired you can find that it is a nightmare to just add all of your news and email accounts.
We all have different ways of backing up our important stuff, but one of the first things that we often need to get working are our email accounts and newsgroups.
If you use Outlook Express then you can make this process a little simpler and easier.
If like me you have several news servers and several email accounts and do not want the hassle of having to input all of the information for each account, read on.
Bear in mind that if you do this you must make safe the floppy and not leave it anywhere that someone could access it.
Remember that if you do not keep this safe from everybody, someone could take a copy of the email accounts and add them on there own computer and have full access to read your email and news accounts and abuse your privacy and post email and messages to newsgroups. Follow the tip below if you feel worried about that happening.
Tip: Once completed you could just select all of the files and zip (compress) them and add a password so that even if someone did get access to the floppy they would not be able to access the accounts stored in the archive backup.
You could, in the event of not being able to post from your own machine, use a trusted friend`s machine to post from easily and quickly.
Proceed as follows.
You will need a floppy disk, preferably blank.
Open Outlook Express and go to Pull down Menu called Tools then select Accounts.
of your accounts in turn (news and email accounts) by
Repeat for all the accounts (news and email accounts).
If the computer gets corrupted or you have a problem you will be able to get it fixed and then by repeating the process in reverse add your accounts back as follows :
Open Outlook Express and go to Pull down Menu called Tools then select Accounts. Select Import and from the "Look In" selection navigate to your floppy drive A and select the account and click Open. Repeat this for all of your email and news accounts.
Of course you will still have to add the newsgroups you subscribed too but the time saved from this exercise will allow you more time to do that.
Don`t say it will not happen to me as that is a sure fire way to bring on that fateful day.
Do it now and you could save yourself a lot of time and heartache as it saves your password and login details in the files so you do not have to worry about them.
If you change
your passwords after you have backed them up you can simply import the
accounts then go to the properties for that particular account and then
edit it to reflect your correct details.
